Some scientists in Austria, from the University of Graz, investigated the creativity levels of 60 professional dancers, in order to find out differences between types of dance/dancers. They chose ballet, modern-contemporary and jazz-musical dancers.
What they found is not surprising, nor unheard of. Mondern-contemp scored best in all areas, from levels of verbal and image-based creativity, openness to experiences, and yes, also psychoticism! Ballet dancers were the lasts and jazz dancers in the middle.
Main explanation: when on stage, modern-contemp dancers face improvisation and creativity needs more than those based on specific moves or choreographers.
The study, though, had a limited panel of investigation categories and of participants. Let’s just hope ballet dancers are more creative than what these people say 🙂
