Romania and Iceland – an exercise of creative exploration

For the isolated culture of Iceland, creativity is important. Yes, Iceland, land of fire and ice. Since Iceland was settled in the 9th century, writing and music have been an integral part of life in the country; and have in recent years reached a large audience on the global stage. While strongly rooted in customs and traditions, today’s Icelandic society is both modern and progressive. It’s not gone unnoticed that some of the most innovative contemporary artists working today hail from Iceland. Björk, Ragnar Kjartansson, Katrín Sigurdardóttir, and Olafur Eliasson are all known for taking unique, interdisciplinary approaches to their art. The country is also host to a thriving microcosm of designers, writers, and musicians. Iceland has consistently ranked among the most innovative countries in the world. One in four people there work in creative careers. The small nation boasts some 7,000 creative companies. Icelanders are found to commonly display attitudes of independence and tolerance which supports openness to experience, the personality attribute that is most strongly correlated with creativity. It seems the inspiration …

from Oslo with love

Choreography Department and Sibiu Ballet Theater representatives met during November with fellow Norwegian creative partners, under the umbrella of Ro-Cultura. The Romanian delegates visited Oslo, headquarters of Panta Rei Dance Theatre (PRD) the dance company known for fast-paced, colourful dance theatre performances accessible to a wide range of audiences in a variety of theatrical and non-theatrical spaces. The bilateral initiative intent visit followed the need of the three parties to exchange information  in order to establish a potential collaboration that aims to pre-define a project for the next program EEA Grants. We are excited and waiting for the next steps of the program. Thank you, Ro-Cultura for making this happen. More details from Choreography Department here. xoxo

New York, New York

Just like the song sings it, the city that never sleeps welcomes you with the most eclectic painting of sounds, smells, colors and movements. Everything can be a source of inspiration, as long as you let yourself be free and indulge in the cultural babel. Experimentation has become core to New York’s arts scene, and this involves dancing too. The metropolis offers everything on the menu: from classical ballet and musicals, to contemporary, church-danced expressions. Choreo Dep’s team has seen it all during a short visit to Manhattan this March. We’ve had the pleasure (and dare to say, honor) to visit New York City Ballet both during a guided tour and a special evening performance of Sara Mearns (interpreting Isadora Duncan). Our visit continued with The Church danspace project, a hip home for contemporary dance and experimentation in Greenwich. This trip was truly transformative, while what we mostly learned is that you always have to say it twice: New York, New York. Once for getting there and twice for returning. And our team …

Roma mea …
